Examples of companies and farms offering internships:

Alumnus Kevin Havartine

"By doing internships, I quickly gained a unique resume working in different industries, in different parts of the country, and in different segments of industries. It gave me a chance to gain real-world skills and work with professionals, and it helped me identify my strengths and preferences. Internships even helped me choose the right career.

My internship experiences made me realize that I loved problem solving and troubleshooting, and directed me to graduate school to gain a strong science and research background to complement my production knowledge."

~Alumnus Kevin Harvatine, Assistant Professor of Nutritional Physiology, Department of Dairy and Animal Science

  • Penn State Career Services

  • Penn State Career Days attracts nearly 500 employers. Held annually each fall, this event is cosponsored by Penn State Career Services and several Penn State colleges, including the College of Agricultural Sciences. In addition, the College of Agricultural Sciences Alumni Society and Alpha Gamma Rho, the agricultural fraternity, provide support for this event.

  • The Network of Agricultural Cooperation is a group of about 140 alumni who volunteer to help students in the College of Agricultural Sciences find appropriate employment. Penn State Extension agents throughout the state, faculty, researchers, and nearly 200 Pennsylvania agricultural organizations can offer advice and can often identify specific job opportunities. For more information, contact Career Services, 814-865-2377, 403 A Boucke Building. Career counselors also are available daily to see students on a walk-in basis.

Courses on Careers

  • AN SC 290W, Careers in Animal Agriculture, is an academic course on careers, summer work experiences, and entry-level employment opportunities available to students interested in the animal sciences.

  • AG 100, Job Placement Skills and Strategies, is a one-credit course to help students interested in agriculture-related careers identify career and life goals and implement career decisions.

Research and Work-Study Positions

Students in Animal Sciences have many opportunities to work with faculty on research projects through work-study positions, independent studies, and paid part-time positions connected with research grants and contracts.

Visit with any of our research faculty or talk to your adviser to find out how you might add research experience to your resume.

Work-Study

All students who answer "yes" to the question "In addition to grants, are you interested in 'work-study'?" on the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) on the Web are considered for Work-Study for fall and spring semesters. (Federal Work-Study is a need-based aid program, so not all students who answer "yes" on the FAFSA receive a work-study award.) Students who are interested in summer work-study can apply via eLion prior to summer semester. See Penn State's Office of Student Aid for more information about the Work-Study Program.
