Interested in learning about beef cattle?
The Penn State Youth Cow Camp is an exciting opportunity for youth 13-18 years old to experience modern beef production practices. You can participate in hands-on activities and learn about all the different phases of beef cattle management.
Here are some of the camp activities:
- Clipping, fitting, and showmanship instruction
- Live animal evaluation, carcass grading, and retail meat fabrication and packaging
- Judging meat and live cattle
- Heat detection, estrus synchronization tools, collection of embryos, artificial insemination (AI)
- Cow herd management, castration, RFID tags, implanting, calving, vaccinations, herd health
- Beef Quality Assurance Certification
- Using ultrasonography
- Pastures and grazing systems
- Ration formulation for feedlot cattle
- Careers in the animal and veterinary sciences
Instruction at the Camp is provided by faculty and staff of the Department of Dairy and Animal Science and the Department of Veterinary and Biological Sciences at Penn State University.
Each youth camper's fees cover meals, chaperoned lodging in university residence halls, and all program materials. In addition, you may bring spending money for souvenirs and other items.
