A Practical Approach to Mortality Composting

Time: Wednesday, March 12th 12 noon (free lunch) OR 6:00 pm (free dinner) (same program at each time)

Topics include:

1. Mortality Composting -Presented by Dr. Gregory Martin, Penn State Cooperative Extension
  • Looks at all legal ways for mortality disposal, but highlights composting
  • Explains the science behind composting
  • Gives practical pictures and examples      
2. Technical & Financial Assistance -Presented by Heather Smeltz, USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS)
  • Highlights technical assistance available from NRCS
  • Looks at the cost associated with mortality disposal
  • Highlights financial aid options available for disposal of mortality 
3. Farmer Panel  -Panelists will include Swine, Poultry, and Cattle Producers
  • Producers who are currently composting will share their experiences
  • Plenty of time to ask questions about composting from your fellow farmers
4. Vegetative Barriers -Presented by Robert Goodling, Penn State Cooperative Extension
  • Vegetative barriers provide “out of sight, out of mind” neighbor protection
  • Examples of fast-growing trees
  • Odor, particulate, and emissions reduction
