Dairy Judging Team Wins First at World Dairy Expo

The collegiate dairy judging team from Penn State captured first place at the prestigious World Dairy Expo intercollegiate judging contest, placing first as the overall team and first in reasons.

Penn State's Dairy Judging Team took top honors in the 87th Intercollegiate Dairy Cattle Judging contest held last weekend at the World Dairy Expo in Madison, WI, placing first both as overall team and overall in reasons.

Charlene Barlieb, Pen Argyl, was high individual in the contest, also placing first in oral reasons, Ayrshires, Brown Swiss and Milking Shorthorns. Trisha Knight, Airville, placed second overall, was second in reasons, first in Jerseys and second in Milking Shorthorns.

Turner Swartz and David Wilson, both of Port Royal, also had excellent days and earned All-American honors.

Dr. Terry Etherton, Head of the Department of Dairy and Animal Science, congratulated the team on their success. "It is an outstanding achievement for the judging team do so well in this prestigious and storied national competition. The judging experience is an extremely valuable experience, teaching the students decision-making and analytical skills. This exceptional placing is a recognition of their strong work and dedication to the team effort," he said.

Twenty-three collegiate teams participated in the contest, with Cornell University's team placing second and Virginia Tech's third.

In addition to placing first in oral reasons, Penn State's team placed first in Brown Swiss and Jerseys, second in Ayrshires, third in Red and Whites, fourth in Guernseys, fifth in Milking Shorthorns, and sixth in Holsteins. In other individual placings, Barlieb earned third in Red and Whites and tenth in Jerseys, Knight was seventh in Holsteins and ninth in Brown Swiss, and Wilson placed eighth in Milking Shorthorns, ninth in Guernseys, and tenth in Red and Whites.

Dale Olver, instructor of Dairy and Animal Science and undergraduate adviser, coaches the team.

Pennsylvania 4-H was represented by Ben Cashell, Logan Horst, Jesse Kline and Michelle Morian, placing ninth out of 30 participating teams. Cashell and Horst are freshmen at Penn State. Cashell earned All American honors by placing 14th in the contest. Kline was high individual for Brown Swiss. The 4-H team was coached by Dr. Chad Dechow, assistant professor of dairy genetics.
