The four major sections of content are Production, Reproduction, Udder Health and Culling and Replacements. Each section contains and introduction section with definition of terms, suggested benchmarks, other indicators or factors to consider. The key indicators are located on a sample set of reports provided by DRMS in Raleigh.

Throughout the course data for a herd is used to demonstrate the process of developing a narrative assessment and action steps to be taken to improve herd performance. Students receive a practice herd they can use to evaluate their progress and then are evaluated on their evaluation of a final herd.

The course is self-paced and takes an estimated 8 to 10 hours to complete. Students have six months to complete the course from registration and may begin at any time during the year. Opportunities for interaction with instructors are provided through on-line chats scheduled each month. Other means of communication include e-mail and bulletin boards within the course.
