Noncredit Course in Reproductive Biology of Animals

How to Enroll

Access to the Penn State electronic course management system (Angel) is necessary to take this course. Individuals who do not have a Penn State Access account may apply for a "Friends of Penn State" account at fps.psu.edu.

Once you have a Penn State Access account or Friends of Penn State Account, please e-mail Dr. Daniel R. Hagen, Professor of Animal Science, drh@psu.edu.

You will then receive, via e-mail, an enrollment form, which should be returned electronically. Upon receipt of your completed enrollment form, you will be added to the course.

Questions about this course or the enrollment process should be directed to Daniel R. Hagen (drh@psu.edu).

This course is intended for those who have an interest in the subject but are not currently enrolled in a college or university program.  Free of charge, it is an outreach offering of the Department of Dairy and Animal Science at University Park.

This course is not intended for students currently enrolled at Penn State.

The objective of this course is to provide a basic background in comparative reproductive biology of animals, especially farm animals, to individuals who  are not pursuing a college degree in the animal sciences.

A basic understanding of animal physiology is useful for completing the course successfully.  Subjects to be covered in the course include the following:

  • anatomy of the reproductive system of farm animals
  • endocrinology of reproduction
  • puberty
  • the estrous cycle
  • sperm production
  • fertilization
  • pregnancy
  • resumption of estrous cyclicity after delivery

Because the field of reproductive biology is constantly changing, with new advances in research and new applications, the content of the course is updated periodically.   Since this course is not for credit and is intended for the general public,  it is offered at a level that hopefully will resonate with the student’s interest and background.  A glossary of terms is provided to assist in learning.
