The Penn State Youth Cow Camp is an exciting opportunity for youth 13-18 years old to experience modern beef production practices with hands-on activities in all phases of beef cattle management.
Camp Activities:
- Clipping, fitting and showmanship instruction
- Live animal evaluation, carcass grading, and retail meat fabrication and packaging
- Judging meat and live cattle
- Heat detection, estrus synchronization tools, collection of embryos, AI
- Cow herd management, castration, RFID tags, implanting, calving, vaccinations, herd health
- Beef Quality Assurance Certification
- Using ultrasonography
- Pastures and grazing systems
- Ration formulation for feedlot cattle
- Careers in the animal and veterinary sciences
Instruction at the Camp is provided by faculty and staff of the Department of Dairy and Animal Science and the Department of Veterinary and Biological Sciences at Penn State University.
The cost of the Camp is $225 per camper and includes meals, chaperoned double occupancy lodging for 4 nights in university dorms, and all program materials.
Campers may bring money for souvenirs and spending money.
Campers should be at least 13 years old and no older than 18 years old on January 1, 2008.
The deadline for registration is May 15, 2008. The Camp will have a maximum enrollment of 40 and a minimum enrollment of 30 campers. Please complete the registration form, below:
