The fifth annual Dairy Days Cow Camp sponsored by the Penn State Dairy Science Club took place at University Park, PA from May 29-31.

More than 80 campers and chaperones from 16 counties participated. Housed in Penn State dormitories, they enjoyed a variety of educational and social events.

Junior division campers attended a dairy products workshop presented by LeeAnn Kapanick, Pennsylvania Dairy Princess, and Alternate Princesses Nicole Wasson and Abby Trotter. A session titled "Don't Leave a Blemish," a workshop about quality assurance, was presented by Dr. Dan Kniffen. Jared Daubert and Anna Smith offered a lesson called "Contagious or Not-Principles of Disease."

Senior division educational sessions included "The Pick of the Litter-Using Genomic Evaluations" by Dr. Chad Dechow, and "Forage Quality-a Key to Rumen Function" by Dr. Geoffrey Zanton. The final senior workshop, "Does Your Cow Need a Pedicure?" was presented by Dr. Ernest Hovingh and focused on hoof health.

Senior division campers and chaperones attended a lively discussion called "Innovations in Biotechnology" with Dr. Terry Etherton, Head of the Department of Dairy and Animal Science.

In addition to the workshops, participants participated in a Friday night picnic and Saturday fun at Tussey Mountain Resort. The camp's final event was a motivational message by Marel Raub, Pennsylvania Director of the Chesapeake Bay Commission. Her message outlined challenges and opportunities facing the dairy industry and the importance of life-long learning.

This year's Dairy Days Cow Camp was co-chaired by Amanda Zembrzycki and Logan Horst. Other Dairy Science Club members who played an integral part in this event were Robyn Bechtel, Stephanie Beeman, Melissa Boess, Elizabeth Cloninger, Leann Gatesman, Janelle Hartzell, Zachary Meyers, Anthony Sharp, Aaron Stepnoski, Sarah Weimer, and Sarah Wickard.
