The Penn State Dairy Science Club held its 84th Dairy Expo in April, offering students an opportunity to gain hands-on experience in working with dairy animals. Anthony Sharp, Stoystown, was named Overall Champion and Champion Fitter, and Joe Leslie, Butler, was Reserve Overall Champion and Champion Showman.
To participate, students selected heifers four weeks before the event in a random drawing and were divided into amateur, intermediate and professional divisions based on previous experience in the show ring.
Dr. Terry Etherton, Head of the Department of Dairy and Animal Science, said, “The Dairy Expo is one of our outstanding student club events which offers students a chance to work closely with dairy cattle, and gives organizers the opportunity to develop leadership and organizational skills. I commend all who participated in making this annual event successful.”
Overall Expo Chair was Chad Hoover, Patton, and Show Manager was Joshua Ebert, Blairsville. Amy Miller, Johnstown; Janelle Hartzell, Slippery Rock; Kacey Garland, Kutztown; and Danielle Shaffer worked with the leaders in preparing and decorating the Snider Ag Arena.
Members spent many evenings every week leading sometimes stubborn heifers around the Penn State Dairy Barns to train the animals for show. In the week prior to the show, animals were washed, clipped and fitted. Thirteen amateurs, 10 intermediates and 10 professionals contended for the championship.
Showmanship judge was Jennifer Boop, Millmont and Fitting Judge was Andrew Reed, Reedsville.
