Penn State's Horse Judging Team Places Fourth at All American Quarter Horse Congress

Team performs well in competition with colleges and universities from around the country.

The Penn State University Horse Judging Team successfully competed in the national Horse Judging Contest at the 43rd All American Quarter Horse Congress in Columbus, Ohio, placing fourth overall. The junior team placed fourth in performance judging, fifth in oral reasons, and sixth in halter reasons.
Penn State was represented by Samantha Greives (Senior, Cranberry Township, PA, Animal Bioscience) as an individual in the Senior Collegiate division and a complete team of sophomores competing in the Junior Collegiate division.
The sophomores were Ashley Bennett (Avis, PA, Broadcast Journalism, Equine Science Minor), Linsey Etz (Cortland, NY, Animal Science, Equine Science Minor), Stephanie Larry (Midlothian, VA, Animal Science, Equine Science Minor), and Chelsie Walter (Lewisburg, PA, Animal Science, Equine Science Minor). The Horse Judging Team is coached by Brian Egan (Instructor of Equine Science) and Cayce Walter (Senior, Animal Science).
erry Etherton, Head of the Department of Dairy and Animal Science said, "I congratulate these young women for their success in this highly competitive contest. They represented Penn State extremely well, and we are proud of their dedication and hard work."
Individual placings were:
- Halter: Stephanie Larry - 2nd, Linsey Etz - 7th, Chelsie Walter -17th
- Performance: Ashley Bennett - 8th, Stephanie Larry - 11th, Chelsie Walter - 18th, Linsey Etz - 25th
- Oral Reasons: Linsey Etz - 9th, Stephanie Larry - 12th * Overall: Stephanie Larry - 6th, Chelsie Walter - 16th, Linsey Etz - 19th.
Students are required to judge 12 classes, and then prepare and present oral reasons to designated listeners to justify their placings. Contestants are scored based on the official placing of the class, and their performance of oral reasons.
The Ohio Quarter Horse Association founded the All American Quarter Horse Congress in 1967 as an event to showcase and promote the American Quarter Horse, and to educate horse owners about the care, training and showing of horses.
