Welcome Extension Educators

Dr. Sandy Costello and Dr. Ernest Hovingh

Dr. Sandy Costello joins the Dairy Alliance team. Dr. Costello will lead the development of certificate programs in dairy production and management. She will also provide expertise in the field of milking management. Prior to joining Dairy Alliance Dr. Costello held the position of dairy extension educator in the Central Susquehanna region. Prior to that, she held positions as a dairy management consultant, a dairy nutritionist, and an udder health and milk quality consultant in private industry. In addition, she served as an assistant professor and lecturer with the Animal and Food Science Department, University of Wisconsin - River Falls, and as an outreach specialist in dairy herd improvement programs with the University of Wisconsin - Madison and AgSources. Dr. Costello earned her Ph.D. at the University of Wisconsin - Madison, where her coursework focused on epidemiology, immunology, computer science and financial management. Dr. Ernest Hovingh joins the Penn State Veterinary Science Extension office. Dr. Hovingh, a native of Canada, comes to us from Virginia Tech. For the past 5 years he had been a member of the Dept. of Large Animal Clinical Sciences at that university. Dr. Hovingh received his veterinary degree from the Ontario Veterinary College, University of Guelph, and his Ph.D. in epidemiology from University of Prince Edward Island, Atlantic Veterinary College. Dr. Hovingh will be assuming some of the responsibilities of Dr. Larry Hutchinson, who retired in August 2002. Primarily, he will be working in Johne's Disease, Dairy Quality Management (special interest in mastitis, milking equipment, and parlor management), epidemiology and ag economics (special interest in lameness), as well as other extension and research areas.
