Team Training

Since their inception, Center for Dairy Excellence Dairy Profit Teams have helped many producers realize higher production, improved reproduction, better herd health, and greater profits. In 2007, the Center introduced a new option, the “Target Team.”
The Target Team complements the existing Profit Team program by applying the team concept to a targeted bottleneck-specific area while assigning a specific timeline to accomplish the task. Penn State Dairy Alliance provides training to new Profit/Target teams in real-time via the worldwide web. These workshops help new Profit/Target Team members learn the basic steps to form a team, establish team goals, and monitor team progress. Workshop participants will better understand the stages of team development and which team tools work best at different stages.

At the end of each year, producers need to evaluate and benchmark their dairy operations. After identifying strengths and weaknesses, summarizing and benchmarking cost of production, and identifying production opportunities, the producer is ready to plan a cash flow for the coming year that reflects the business climate that is expected that year.

Feed Management Planner Certification Program

Offered in conjunction with the Penn State Dairy Nutrition Conference, this workshop provides consultants an opportunity to prepare for and take the feed management planner examination. The Natural Resources Conservation Service has defined feed management as one of the 6 core elements of a Comprehensive Nutrient Management Plan that will be required of permitted Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations. The Mid-Atlantic Water Program, consisting of Penn State, Virginia Tech, and the University of Maryland, along with NRCS, is preparing the feed industry for its critical role in this process. This workshop provides a nutritionist the opportunity to become a certified feed management planner/ technical service provider (TSP). The examination, offered through the American Registry of Professional Animal Scientists, will be offered at the conclusion of this workshop at 5:00 p.m.

This workshop is designed to help participants better identify the factors limiting reproductive performance. Participants will utilize the Penn State Reproductive Drill-Down Assessment Tool to evaluate and identify specific areas of management that limit reproductive performance. Participants will visit and evaluate a dairy herd and develop a strategy to address the weaknesses. New concepts in reproductive management, synchronization systems, and herd health will be covered.

Participants will learn how to effectively use QuickBooks to organize their accounting systems to provide the information needed for making sound management decisions. A standardized chart of accounts (COA) designed specifically for dairy businesses will be provided to all participants. Instructors will teach the class how to: restore the standardized COA to their computer; personalize the COA for their operation; set up new accounts within the standardized COA; make deposits and write checks; implement an accrual accounting system through accounts payable and receivable features; reconcile accounts; search for specific transactions; evaluate the accuracy of their system using key reports; generate reports for business analysis.
