The Equine Environmental Stewardship Short Course Program

A series of Environmental Short Courses has been developed for delivery through county extension programs this year. The Equine Environmental Stewardship Short Course will provide information and “hands on” learning experiences designed to provide you with the knowledge and skills necessary to develop sustainable and environmentally sound farm management practices. The short course will include a minimum of 12 hours of instruction and activities and will be offered at several locations throughout the state.

  • Learn to manage the health risks associated with forages and toxic plants.
  • Understand the importance of plants in absorbing soil nutrients & reducing soil erosion.
  • Collect soil samples & apply nutrients to your pastures using the soil test report.

  • Learn how to renovate, manage weeds, & improve pastures.
  • Develop plans to rotate pastures.
  • Evaluate the quality of your pastures & complete a pasture condition score sheet.

  • Learn to properly store, compost and apply manure.
  • Learn how current nutrient management legislation affects your operation.
